新学期は友だち付き合いを広げたり、ボランティアも始めてみようかな、なんて思っていたら、お母さんに「もっと勉強をがんばりなさい」と水を差されちゃった、という人もいるのでは。
この「水を差す」という言葉、英語にするとさまざまな表現があります。
例えば、「高校では友だちをたくさん作っていっぱい遊ぼうって思っていたのに、成績を上げないとだめってお母さんに水を差されちゃったのよ」なら、I thought I'd make many friends at high school and have a lot of fun with them, but my mom put a damper on things, telling me that I had to improve my grades．
また、「せっかく○○ちゃんと仲良くなれたのに、クラス替えで水を差されたわ」なら、 Despite ○○ and I becoming quite close over the year, the change of classes threw cold water on our relationship． などとなります。
一方、会社だったらこんなこともあるかもしれません。「経費削減がせっかく順調に進んでいた新プロジェクトに水を差して、かなりの計画縮小に追い込まれた」（Even though the new project had been proceeding smoothly, the expenditure cutbacks threw a wet blanket over it and it was scaled down considerably．）
また、先日交渉が妥結した米韓の自由貿易協定について、読売新聞は、協定が成立して、「日本の輸出産業が最大の貿易相手国である米国で韓国勢にシェアを奪われれば、国内の景気回復に水を差す恐れもある」（If South Korea grabs some of the market share of Japanese exporters in the United States, Japan's largest trading partner, there's a risk that this will splash cold water on Japan's economic recovery．）としています。
またデータ偽装など不祥事による電力会社の原子炉運転停止について、「原発停止でＣＯ２を排出する火力発電への切り替えが相次いだことが、温室効果ガスの削減に水を差す結果につながっている」（The suspension of nuclear power generation and subsequent switching to CO2‐emitting thermal power has resulted in a dampening of efforts to reduce greenhouse gases．）としています。
そういえば駆け出しのころ、緊急取材でデートに水を差された（I had many dates spoiled by having to cover stories at short notice．）ことを思い出してしまいました。（塚原 真美 記者）
